Swiss Village does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, or handicaps. Swiss Village Vision Statement:

To be an organization that provides innovative services and facilities that enables people to live to their potential. History

The idea of a home for senior citizens was first conceived in 1963 when a bequest designated for this purpose was received by the First Mennonite Church from the Eli A. Habegger Estate. The official body of the church appointed a committee to make a thorough study of the needs in our community, to estimate the number of persons in the retired age group, and to evaluate the availability of retirement and healthcare facilities in the general area of Berne. In the following year, 1964, further impetus to the cause was given when Mrs. O.F. (Lucy) Gilliom and the A.M. Stahly family made a very generous gift for this same purpose. Mrs. Gilliom desired that such a facility should have broader coverage than only one church and suggested that it be made available to anyone regardless of race, creed, or color. Through this substantial contribution, people were challenged, an organization was formed, and many responded to the cause with gifts of cash and property. Swiss Village truly became a community project. In May of 1968, Swiss Village opened its doors to the first residents. Today, Swiss Village now serves as a continuing care retirement community offering Duplex Homes, Independent Living Apartments, Residential Living, Assisted Living, Healthcare, Memory Care, and Short Term Rehabilitation.
