A legacy of commitment to seniors Peabody Retirement Community’s story begins with James B. Peabody and his son, Thomas. When James’ wife, Estelle, died in 1928, James found a way to both commemorate her life and fulfill his dream of building a retirement community where older adults could live free from fear and worry. He joined efforts with Presbyterian clergy and laymen of the Synod of Indiana and the result was The Estelle Peabody Memorial Home.



When James passed in 1934, Thomas built The Singing Tower, a central monument on the Peabody campus, as a memorial to his father. The 105-foot carillon marks time quarterly every hour with Westminster chimes and stands as both a testimony to the generosity of the Peabody Family and as a symbol of Peabody Retirement Community’s commitment to serving older adults.
