"Our family’s experience with Brookdale Oak Park Senior Living was extremely concerning. After meeting with the Sales Manager and arranging a nurse assessment for my father, I expected a clear and professional follow-up. Instead, when I reached out for an update, I was contacted by the Assistant Director, who spoke to me in a dismissive and aggressive way. I was told only that my father would be “better suited” for another facility. When I asked politely for clarification, she refused to provide any explanation, spoke to me disrespectfully, and ultimately hung up on me. This type of treatment is unacceptable from any senior living provider, let alone someone in leadership. Families making decisions about care deserve transparency, honesty, and compassion. As an African American family, I also cannot help but question whether bias contributed to how abruptly and disrespectfully we were treated. "River Glen is everything and more than one should expect from a senior assisted living facility. Unlike the new modern institutional like facilities that exist only for the money not the welfare of the senior, River Glen cares about each individual. It's smaller, and home like atmosphere and staff along with an individual plan creates a better environment for the senior. I brought a senior brother from a large, assisted living facility in Colorado to River Glen and the difference in individual care was like night and day. The staff understood the needs of my brother from day one. With a smooth transition from admissions to a set program and professional staff of OT and PT made my brother feel that the staff really cares about his welfare. "The Breakers is an affordable option for Independent living, with some inconveniences you should consider up-front. The building was built in 1988 and show signs of deferred maintenance and poor upkeep. This partially explains the low cost. And one day the building will need to be completely refurbished or sold, so be aware when the signs emerge that this is in the offing. The 4 elevators cannot adequately handle the resident population when one or more elevator will be shut down due to a move in, medical emergency, or frustrated staff holding the doors open with a chair on a floor to keep it for themselves. This can result in wait times over 30 minutes and makes planning for doctor's visits problematic as you never know how much time to allow. And the elevator size can't handle all the modern mobility assistance devices that many residents use now. Some staff are wonderful but most are burned out. "My parents were both at the Hawthorn Lakes facility in Independent living side. They initially signed up for the mixed in the bridge between the 2 units. All was good until my Dad passed. Then they started screwing up the bills -- charging for a parking spot he gave up a month before passing, and still charging as if he were living there. This was all through ACH transfers. Tammy the Exec. Dir. at the time did try to help and the only thing that worked was turning off ACH after having nearly $12K in credit. Mom continued to live there, but used their in-home services. Home services was not doing what they said on several occasions. Finally, when mom ended up in hospital, they stopped doing the weekly light cleaning and adding tons of charges. "I could never say enough good things about Brookdale. The employees are the best. The facility is beautiful. There are tons of activities such as games, cards, swimming pool, pool table. The living room is very homey and a wonderful place to come sit. My parents moved there about 7 years ago. Everyone was so nice and treated them so well. They always made sure all their needs were met. When my dad got dementia they went above and beyond in caring for him until he died. My mom is still there and they are so kind to her. With this Covid pandemic they are checking on her several times a day to make sure she has everything she needs. They bring her snacks, puzzles, and other goodies.
